“There can be few fields of human endeavor in which history counts for so little as in the world of finance. Past experience, to the extent that it is part of memory at all, is dismissed as the primitive refuge of those who do not have the insight to appreciate the incredible wonders of the present.”

John Kenneth Galbraith
Economist and Financial Historian

Why should I subscribe?

The free newsletter will help you forecast the potential consequences of current financial events by revealing the outcomes of similar events throughout history. On average, subscribers receive two issues per month.

Why is this newsletter credible?

The content for the newsletter draws heavily from my book, Investing in U.S. Financial History, which arrives online and in bookstores on February 27, 2024. The book is the culmination of a 3-year research effort to document the full financial history of the United States from 1790 through 2023.

What will I learn?

The newsletter explains current events by comparing them with similar episodes from the past. For a sample of past newsletters and research papers that demonstrate how the past can be used to demystify the present, please click on my research page.

What are the author’s qualifications?

Prior to writing Investing in U.S. Financial History, Mark Higgins, CFA, CFP® served as an investment consultant for more than 12 years, advising institutional trustees who had collective oversight over more than $60 billion. Over the years, he discovered that understanding the past was much more helpful to clients than focusing only on one’s life experience. At the same time, he discovered that there was no comprehensive book recounting the full financial history of the United States. Investing in U.S. Financial History is the result of an intense, three-year endeavor to fill this void.

Mark Higgins graduated from Georgetown University Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in English and Psychology. He received an MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, and is a CFA charterholder and CFP® practitioner.
